How to Fix a Hot Tub - Solutions for Common Problems

Here's a list of some common hot tub problems and the solutions. Get in touch if you have any questions or need advice for repairing your hot tub info@hottuboutfitters.com

Tripping Breaker

If the breaker is tripping, it's likely the cause is a faulty element. Hot tub elements usually need to be replaced every 3-7 years. To diagnose the faulty element, turn off the breaker, then disconnect the element, then turn the breaker back on. If the breaker does not trip with the element disconnected, then it means you're do for a new element. The M-7 Element will fit most heaters, but you can also send us a photo if you want advice.

Union Leaks

Is the hot tub losing water? The first place to look is in the equipment compartment. Take a look at each of the unions (the connection points in the plumbing). This is the most common place to find a leak. Fortunately, these leaks are usually easy to resolve. First you'll need to either close the knife valves in this area of plumbing, or drain the hot tub. Then open the union, remove the o-ring, put in a new o-ring with some silicon lubricant, then close the union and make sure it's nice and tight. While changing one o-ring it might be a good idea to swap them all at the same time. The most common o-rings are found here.

Slow Leaks

Is the hot tub losing water and you can't find the leak? It's probably worth trying a bottle of Fix-a-Leak to see if that resolves the problem.

Flow Error

Commonly displayed as "FL" a flow error is usually caused by a dirty filter or a filter that isn't seated properly. Try taking out the filter and see if this resolves it (turn the breaker off then on to re-set the error code). If that doesn't resolve it, take a look at all the knife valves to make sure they are open all the way.

Water Quality Issues

Most water quality problems can be fixed by balancing the water chemistry, cleaning the filter, and making sure everyone showers before entering the water. Take a look at our 5 Easy Tips for Crystal Clear Hot Tub Water
